Life savers thought quickly to avoid tragedy
A COMBINATION of training, tireless effort and inventiveness have helped avoid a tragedy. After Met Caloundra lifesavers were involved in one of their busiest weekends in recent memory, notching up more than 100 rescues in two days, it became apparent that some quick-thinking helped contain what could have been a disaster. On Saturday, 76 people were pulled from the water at Kings Beach in a matter of hours. Super-sized swell, strong sweeps and extended rips combined to catch plenty ..>> view originalStorm juniors settling in on Coast
IT IS wonderful to hear the Storm under-20s side has settled in so well on the Sunshine Coast. Coach Eric Smith said he was humbled by how well the rugby league-mad region had embraced his troops during the past three months since the team relocated to Bokarina from Melbourne. And with 14 Sunshine Coast juniors in the team, it is no wonder why the team are feeling the love. The team is closely linked with the Sunshine Coast Falcons Intrust Super Cup team. The team will kick off th..>> view originalQueensland weather: Rain cancels Sunshine Coast Cup

THE non-profit Maroochy River Rowing Club is run by volunteers who are providing a real opportunity for Sunshine Coast students to get fit and compete on the water. The club started in July 2012 to cater for the absence of rowing opportunities for school students on the Coast. Rowing is an Olympic sport which requires reasonable co-ordination and discipline in which a full body exercise uses legs, trunk and arms to propel the boat. Being a non-contact sport, injuries are rare. Mar..>> view originalFishing, surfing and beach guide for Wednesday, January 27

WHAT'S more Australian than eating lamb and enjoying a cold beer while listening to the Triple J Hottest 100 on January 26? Going to the Aussie World's Australia Day Dunny Races. At least that's what chief operating officer Aaron Flanagan thinks. Yesterday capped off the 24th true-blue race between Sunshine Coast sports clubs with thousands of locals and tourists flocking to the amusement park despite the rain. SOME people say roller derby is the best fun you can have on wheels. The contact sport is played by two teams of five who roller skate in the same direction around a track. The idea is to get your team's designated jammer to score points by lapping members of the opposing team. Each team aims to hinder the opposing jammer while helping their own jammer. So if you are aged between seven and 17 and think you'd like to give this fast-paced, tactical, entertaining sport a go, you shou..>> view originalI Am Summer winner has been there, snapped it

I DISAGREE with Keith Whiteside (Daily, January 26 - "Light rail a solution for the highway mess"). Light rail is a suburban tram service and not a long distance mass people mover like railways. Within 50 years, south-east Queensland from Noosa to Brisbane, will be suburban development with maybe a million people living between the sea and hills and experience shows that traffic infrastructure between the Gold Coast and Brisbane is inadequate, government and councils north of Brisban..>> view originalFalling fuel price makes us cheap
AS THE price of oil continues to plummet, Sunshine Coast motorists are enjoying having some of the cheapest fuel in Australia. The cheapest in our region yesterday, according to the price monitoring website motormouth.com.au, was at Glass House Mountains where the Puma service station had standard unleaded fuel at a lowly non-discount price of 107.9c a litre. That was cheaper than in nearly every capital city in Australia. Only Sydney (101.6c/L) and Melbourne (103.1c/L) had cheaper fuel..>> view original
