Local tensions push Coast Muslims to travel away to pray
TENSIONS are flaring up in the Sunshine Coast Muslim community with calls for a more transparent governing body. Orhan Dilbaz, the former president of Muslim Organisation Sunshine Coast, said the current president Ben Nitschke and governing body were fuelling fear against Muslims because of their secrecy. Mr Dilbaz said he had resigned from MoSC a year ago because he was merely a "puppet president" and said local Muslims needed to unite and hold an election for replacements. The Dail..>> view originalSharing is the key
CONGRATULATIONS to all Coast lifesavers and officials after last weekends state titles on the Gold Coast. Maroochy and Alex led the way in the juniors the prior weekend. It's obvious the great work the council and national lifesaving officials have done in regards to The Aussies. Normally based at one club, 2016 will see the carnival split equally between Maroochy, Alex and Mooloolaba. It will be terrific to see what each club and its area has to offer for the visitors. The Fe..>> view originalLETTER: Her words, not mine
IN CASE Byron Hickson-Jamieson missed it (Daily, March 27) Roz Ward, the self-proclaimed Marxist academic responsible for The Safe Schools agenda has said (her words - yes, really): the program is "about supporting sexual and gender diversity - not about bullying". Perhaps you missed this in your haste to respond? Fortunately most of my peers and myself were "not encouraged to bully anyone in order for them to conform" by parents or teachers - where did you get that dumb idea? And wh..>> view originalStorm step up defence
RUGBY LEAGUE: The Sunshine Coast-based Melbourne Storm under-20s will be looking to arrest a three-game losing streak on Saturday in their round five Holden Cup match against Newcastle. Five Coast juniors will line up for the side that will play in a curtain raiser to the NRL team at Melbourne's AAMI Park. The young Storm side started the season well with a 44-24 win over the Dragons at Sunshine Coast Stadium, but have struggled with their defence since, letting in 120 points in their pa..>> view originalLETTER: Survival not guaranteed
HISTORY has many examples of species over-population being the catalyst of that species demise. Science through the 20th Century has created the survivability of the human species by reducing early deaths across the globe and the increase of life from the age of 60 to approaching the 80s, an increase of living for about another 20 years within half a century. There is an increasing shortage of potable water across the globe and there is a reduction of surplus foods in storage. These ..>> view originalFull steam ahead for laughs

THE Queensland Government has committed $22 million in new funding to upgrade four roundabouts on Kawana Way to increase capacity ahead of the opening of the new Sunshine Coast University Hospital. Roundabouts at the intersections of Kawana Way and Metier Linkway, Premier Circuit, Kawana Island Boulevard and Jamaica Way will be upgraded to include two through lanes for Kawana Way under a package of works announced as part of the governments new State Infrastructure Plan released this month..>> view originalVIDEO: Hilariously awkward way to stop drivers texting
HELLO. It is not your phone you're looking for. In a brilliant yet uncomfortably hilarious push to stop drivers from texting while behind the wheel, the NZ Transport Safety Agency has unveiled a sure-fire solution. When your driver -- whether it's your mate, family member or child -- reaches out for their phone, hold their hand. And if you want to stare longingly at them and sing Lionel Ritchie's Hello, then all the better.>> view originalLETTER: Let silent majority speak
RE: Ashley Robinson's article "Can't we be a bit like the Gold Coast" (Daily, March 26). While I do not always agree with Ashley, he has hit the nail on the head. It is true the vocal minority appear to have a disproportionate say in how the Sunshine Coast should grow and develop. We need to change and we need to understand that if we don't, we severely limit our future. I have said on many occasions that of course we don't want to "look like" the Gold Coast but there are plenty of..>> view original
